Katie Wenger wrote -If you visit a school in Africa, you will notice that in kindergarten the amount of boys vs. girls is 50%/50%. As you get up to 5th grade, the number of girls decreases rapidly. This is because when the girls get their periods, they are married, or warriors get them pregnant right away. Everyone is afraid that if the girls get an education, they will leave their village forever. The girls are often pressured into stopping their education by their families, tribes, villages, elders, etc. Without an education these young women have no chance in the world. The girls that aren't being forced to leave school right away can’t even pass a standardized test to get into high school because they miss one week of school every month when they get their periods. They have no supplies such as tampons or pads, and most of them don't even wear underwear. They also haven’t had any sexual education about diseases and safe sex because they start having sex at a young age. When a warrior goes to the house of a young girl, the mother is powerless to do anything. The mother just has to watch her daughter go off with strange men. To solve these very important issues, we need to find a way to provide a sexual education for the girls and raise awareness for the diseases that are out there. We also need to make sure that the girls have the supplies necessary so they don’t miss school when they are menstruating. That way, the girls have the same chance that the boys do.
