THE STORY:

Meet Sebastian, 12 years old with high functioning autism. He was non-verbal for 10 years of his life as everyone told us he would never speak. I was determined to prove everyone wrong. Sebastian now speaks and has a lot to say. His sister Isabella is 10 years old and looks up to her brother as she wishes, but really helps him make many decisions he may need help with. She is the gate keeper to keeping him safe and out of trouble when someone bullies him or tries to take advantage.

Sebastian attends an amazing youth group which he was invited to just recently in April 2014. There are twelve tribes and his tribes name is ISSACHAR. As his leader requested to have Sebastian enter the youth group, she saw something in him that no one else had, courage and the drive to never give up. It has been a challenge since he is the only autistic soon to be teen in the group.

When their group was presented the challenge I was faced with that challenge as well, (TIME and AGE)…what we all lack. Due to TIME restraint of owning a restaurant and his age & gift of Autism we are limited in what to do. So we went thru all of the possibilities, prayed and came up with a solution, TAMALES for a CAUSE. When he was asked in a forum what he thought of doing, the other teams laughed and criticized him for wanting to do this. They don’t believe he will make it or be able to sell to the goal in time. He came home determined he would do this till the very end, not caring what others thought. So he asked, “Mom, can I work in your restaurant bussing table, cleaning, sweeping and moping? Can you help me make tamales and sell them in the restaurant? I can’t just sit at home doing nothing…and Isabella jumped and said “Yeah, let’s show them what we are made of.” Mom said YES… so here we are at JC’s Street Tacos proving that Autistic Kids can make a difference. This will prove that a disability to human kind is measured by how far you can take it to your advantage. All Superheroes have a disability: Superman could fly, Batman had strength, Iron Man had intelligence, Wonder Woman had strength, Green Lantern had super strength, and the list goes on. In the end, they were all at one time or another, made fun of and became leaders as Sebastian puts it.

As a Mom, I now challenge everyone to come by the restaurant JC's Street Tacos in Hawthorne, CA or support this cause on line. I have raised them to earn things and to never take no for an answer. The team raising the most will be able to go to the Holy Land of Jerusalem or to see the opening of the Holy Temple of Solomon in Brazil and he wants this bad.
