The Gift of Travel
Organized by: Hannah Neace
In order to provide our students a well-rounded educational experience we are taking them to New York City. We are hoping to raise $20,000 for students who are academically successful but struggling financially. $20,000 would provide 8 students and 2 chaperons with $2000 to apply to their trip to New York City. Students are responsible for at least $800 toward their trip. Each student will be exposed to the vast and powerful cultural and artistic environment that only New York City can provide. I cannot overstate the importance of funding this experience, especially for the students who may not otherwise be able to travel abroad. There simply is no substitute for the learning experience of being immersed in the culture and environment of New York City . The students' inner vision of what exists and what is possible for them to achieve with their lives expands exponentially as they actually touch the timeless accomplishments of other individuals and societies that existed decades or centuries before they were born. As they begin to understand what this means about them and their generation, they are simultaneously inspired and humbled. It is a tremendous reality check for a teenage ego to realize the possibilities for their future are infinite, but this era and their life is a such small part of history and the human experience. Perhaps of greatest importance, is the opportunity for students to grasp the concept that their world with its familiar social norms, beliefs, values, rules, and perspectives is only one of many. And there is no better time to add this awareness to an individual's perception of themselves and the world than at this critical stage of their emotional and intellectual development. Students will participate in theater based workshops, see three Broadway Plays, tour museums, explore architecture, and experience the fast paced side of show business that so many of them want to achieve after graduation.
