So much has happened in our first year that we wanted to make sure you were the first to know. What started in November of 2011 with 4 girls turned into The Girl2B Foundation supporting 21 girls today!
We are a New York based 501c3 Corporation as of March 2012.
Thanks to all the donations and support we have received throughout the year our girls are on the road to social and economic empowerment!
Who are the girls?
The girls in our program come from some of the poorest backgrounds in Kolkata. Their families sleep in the streets or if they are lucky have a small dwelling in a slum area. Their mothers are beggars and servants trying to make ends meet. If they have siblings, most likely their brother was given the opportunity at school, medicine, food, but the girl is not as lucky. She is too much of a financial burden. There is a saying in India that says that "educating a girl is like watering your neighbor’s garden".
Should we say more? That is where Girl2B comes in.
The girls in our program will be the first educated not only in their family, but in their communities. Without the support of the Girl2B program they would not have the opportunity that we simply take for granted in our side of the world. These girls are now in grade school, high school, university, or in beautician schools or learning how to be great tailors. They now have a present, and a great future.
Who makes it happen in Kolkata?
We have an agreement with The Hope Foundation Kolkata. Girl2B creates and funds the projects from New York, and Hope monitors the girls under their guardianship and facilitates our project.
What else do we do?
We support 3 boys (the brothers of some of our girls)
We offer extended family support, which has given medical support to many of the mothers and families of our girls.
We have launched an arts and crafts program for girls to earn pocket money in between their studies.
We have implemented special life skills training to cover a broad spectrum of special needs in the future.
What have we accomplished in such a short amount of time?
We have managed to support girls in need using a holistic individualized approach so that each girl can reach her full potential. In order to do this we have established a child protection program and an empowerment program. Regardless where a girl is in her life long struggle, we take her in and set her up to win!
What do we have planned for 2013?
Very soon we will have our first graduate of the Girl2B program. This means she will be able to support herself and be integrated into a society that never gave her a chance. We have plans for these girls to become Girl2B Ambassadors, to carry on the work and give back to other girls in need.
We also have 7 additional girls on our waiting list anxious to get started in the program.
We have a new board of directors with diverse backgrounds who are ready to govern and inspire Girl2B.
We plan to launch Girl2B fashion, and host our first Girl2B birthday party.
Please continue to follow us and our work; we will have lots of updates on the girls.
And once again THANK YOU!
