BENEFITING: OUR CASAS RESIDENT COUNCIL INCORPORATED
In celebration of my 33rd birthday, I'm donating $50 toward direct assistance to the families displaced from the Mission Trails Mobile Home Park in San Antonio, TX last winter. I invite you to join me, and help me reach my personal fundraising goal of $6,000 in 2016.
In 2014, nearly 300 people were taken by surpsise when they suddenly found out that their mobile home community, located near the historic Mission Reach of the San Antonio River, was being sold to a developer to be converted into high-end apartments. The residents included many elders and families with small children, who were forced to move out of their homes on short notice, and with very little - if any - financial assistance or support services.
Many of these families continue to live in sub-standard housing, or are currently homeless. The three families that I have had the chance to meet moved to a new lot outside the city limits, where they lived without electricity for the first year after the displacement. Today, they are still there, working hard to pay the mortgage on their lots, but living without running water in their new locations.
I have been inspired by the hard work, positive attitude, and perseverance of these families. They have been working double shifts, repairing the damage to their trailers caused by the move, and keeping their kids healthy and active in school. However, with the cost of installing new water services estimated at $10,000 per lot, they are falling behind rather than getting ahead.
Funds donated on this page will be distributed directly to former residents of the Mission Trails Mobile Home Park through Our Casas Resident Services, a non-profit that provides direct housing assistance to low-income families. In 2015, Our Casas dispersed nearly $4,000 in generous donations (from people like you!) to 10 families from Mission Trails, and your donations made a huge difference.
My personal goal for 2016 is to raise $6,000 toward "The Good Neighbor Fund" to help families displaced from Mission Trails meet their urgent housing needs. I hope you'll join me in making a tax-deductible donation toward this goal.
