GRAND OPERA HOUSE INC wrote -
Here at The Grand Opera House in Wilmington, Delaware we are joining forces with steel drum sensation Atiba Fields to bring our area The Grand Steel Band. Our mission is to provide an opportunity for community members, ages 7 to adult, to learn to play steel drums and be part of a performing ensemble, while also increasing community awareness of the steel band and Caribbean culture.
But this comes at a cost. The Grand and Atiba himself provide all of the instruments to the students for their weekly rehearsals.
Currently, The Grand owns 6 Bass and 1 Triple Guitar/Cello. To make up the rest of the band, Atiba transports his personal drums back and forth every week to rehearsal. This is not only tedious, but also very costly when drums get damaged in transit. Therefore, we want to buy more instruments to keep on-site permanently so the band can grow and thrive in the future.
What does it cost?
4 Tenors @ $1400 each = $5600
2 Double Tenors @ $1900 each = $3800
2 Double Seconds @ $1900 each = $3800
10 Mallets @ $12-15 each = $138
10 Stands @ $85-220 each = $1440
Total Startup Expenses = $14,778
We are hoping to raise $15,000. If we raise more, additional funds will be used to purchase new music, offer scholarships to students in need, and maintain the instruments. It costs about $1,000 to tune the drums annually.
We hope you are willing to donate to this wonderful cause. Many in Delaware can’t travel to the islands to play or even hear the steel drums, so please, help us bring the Caribbean to Wilmington!
