The Grassroots Cambodian Employer
Organized by: Moth Pheap
After leaving Pursat province to study international relations in Battambang, tour company founder Sopheap slept in a city pagoda for three years. Perhaps this is one reason why feels such compassion for those he meets on his guided trips.
Passionate about politics and the wind of change surrounding Cambodia, 24-year-old, Sopheap, did a year of research before launching Butterfly Tours in 2012. He created a small office for the business alongside his home, which he shares with four other friends. The local business now offers four tours (2 by bicycle and 2 walking), and helps other students start their careers by appointing them as tour guides. Butterfly Tour is not an NGO, it is a company owned and operated by local Cambodian students. Sopheap and his team (?) wish to guide the entrepreneurial spirit of university students as they engage in their studies, and to inspire Cambodian employees that they too can become confident employers should they so wish.
The company has conducted many tours over the past 18 months (?) and it's popularity on the Trip advisor website has steadily grown in that time. Recently the company was ranked the number 1 activity in Battambang out of a list of 12. Clients have posted very positive reviews and have requested that Butterfly Tour expand its business to incorporate full day and overnight tours. Such tours would enable tourists to gain a deeper understanding of the way local Cambodian people live their day-to-day lives.
Living and growing up in a poor country, Cambodia doesn't have much in the way of formal support for small business. People who want to run their businesses in Cambodia have had struggle by themselves. Often the opportunities for Cambodian entrepreneurs are so few and the hurdles faced in setting up a small business are so great that it may seem like an impossible dream. Young entrepreneurs will face difficulties due to their lack of financial and technical support for operational costs, such as hardware, computers, and consultants.
Your help, no matter how little will make a big difference to the lives of these young entrepreneurs.
Help young Cambodian entrepreneurs.
