What is the Great Contraption Race?
The Great Contraption Race (GCR) is a fun, 2-person and or 4-person team race that will soon become The WNY event that will be on everyone’s bucket list near and far! On Saturday August 2, 2014 teams will race down the lower Niagara River on their floating contraptions beginning in Lewiston, NY finishing in Youngstown, NY.
The race occurs on floating contraptions designed and built by each team. The contraptions must be made mostly from recycled materials, they must be able to float and the contraption can only be powered by human power, and or, a man made sail to float down the River.
Your team will get extra points if your contraption is amphibious allowing it to steer and roll on a slightly graded pitch into the Niagara River in Lewiston on its own (or with a push) from a starting gate supplied by GCR's race officials. If your contraption does not have wheels your team must be able to slide or carry it to the water. The contraption must also be able to travel down the mighty Niagara River 6.2 miles to Youngstown, NY where you must then be able to roll or be pulled out of the river with its team crew's help, and then pushed or pulled .5 miles to the finish line in Youngstown, NY's Veteran's Park.
Costumes and themed contraptions are highly recommended. Food and beverage will be supplied at the finish line where we will celebrate a fun-filled day in the incredible lower Niagara River Region with music and awards for team competitors and their support crews. This area is also open to spectators and visitors as well as the communities that make up the lower Niagara River Region.
There are 3 divisions of sponsored teams: corporate / military, collegiate and individuals.
Each contraption entry is $150 – each team member is encouraged to collect individual funds- this can be through social media like mobile cause or crowd rise or through direct donation, we can help!
Points are given for creativity, those that finish, and those that that don't and the time it takes from start to finish.
Proceeds from this great event are going to the very worthy, 'It Happened To Alexa Foundation.' The Alexa Foundation is a national charity based in Lewiston, NY that assists rape victims and their families. Please join us for this fun filled event starting on Aug 1, 2014 with our VIP event under the stars – Saturday Aug 2 – Race on the mighty Niagara ending with a fun- filled day of music and delicious food from local eateries.
