BENEFITING: RACING TO REGISTER
Many athletes have their “thing”: Tiger Woods has the red shirt/black pants; Troy Polamalu has his long hair under the helmet and Paul 'Barny' Mathews has….chest hair. Ok it’s not as sexy as some of the others but, well to him it’s sexy. But alas, every man has his breaking point and price and Barny found his. He has embraced “The Great Shave Off”. In support of Racing To Register, a national non-profit whose mission is to inspire people to join the national bone marrow donor registry, Barny will have his chest hair skillfully removed at the GoPro Ironman World Championship in Kailua-Kona, HI at this year’s event, in October 2014. The catch is we need to raise at least $5,000.00 to make this happen!
Paul remarks “ As the athlete ambassador of Racing To Register, I am more than happy to part with something I care about. And I hope in turn people will realize there is no harm in joining the Registry and parting with some marrow or stem cells in order to save someone else’s life. By donating to this event, people can help save the lives of blood cancer patients around the world”.
The money will go to great use. Racing To Register uses endurance sports to inspire people of all races and ethnicities to join the donor registry. Not just in the US, but around the world. There are only 4,000,000 people on the international Delete Blood Cancer Registry, whom RTR partners with. Consider:
1. The odds of finding a match range from 60% downward. For some minorities it is as low as 2%.
2. The chance of matching with a family member are only 30%. The rest rely on the registry.
3. Every 10 seconds someone dies from a blood cancer, every 5 seconds someone is diagnosed with one.
4. Leukemia is the #1 childhood disease killer. And it is very curable as well.
We hope that you will donate to this wonderful cause. Any amount will go toward supporting the RTR mission, and helping get more people on the registry.
