The Garden State Community Kitchen was formed in November of 2012 with the intention of improving the lifestyles of a number of local children and families by providing education in the areas of gardening, personal fitness, nutrition science, and hands on cooking classes. It is with a special blended curriculum in those areas that sustainable changes to the lifestyle may be expected. From May until the end of October, 2013, our program coordinators and supported families played in the dirt, took care of plants, learned a bunch of different exercises to do from home, talked about vitamins, minerals, and the foods containing them, and made dozens and dozens of delicious, health supportive meals.
2014 will prove to be a telling and exciting year for the GSCK. We are running a program through the home of our new partner at the Sand Hills Community Wellness Center from July through August that runs sort of like a daycamp. Kids will enjoy organic gardening at our brand new, volunteer built, 30 X 34 foot raised bed garden, will enjoy fitness classes taught by yoga teachers, piloxi teachers, certified personal trainers, and will swim at the local swim club, enjoy a Nutrition class, make recipe cards, flashcards, and worksheets on Nutrition, and prepare lunch for themselves under the watchful gaze of a Natural Chef, also our Director.
We hope to reach up to 40 students this summer and we also hope to catch on in a huge way after 2 successful years running without any tax exemption and through partnerships and crowd funding alone. Help us reach our goals!!!!
