Many of you know why our family walks to find a cure for ALS, but in case you don't …
Our friend, Paul Launer, was diagnosed in 2011 at age 47 with ALS. Paul was one of our daughter's first soccer coaches and a true gem of a gentleman. Paul’s two girls are the same age as our two kids and are in school with them. The Launer family is a force – pure joy and light. Paul's positive outlook, despite his prognosis, continues to serve as an inspiration for us.
See the video (use the arrows in the picture box at left) Paul made over a year ago when he was still talking. Sadly, Paul has almost lost his ability to verbally communicate.
ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig's disease, attacks a person's muscles gradually robbing their ability to walk, speak, eat and breathe; yet usually keeping their mind intact. The nerve degeneration leads to muscle weakness and impaired speaking, swallowing and breathing; eventually causing complete paralysis and death. While some symptoms are treatable, there is currently no cure.
While Paul's health has continued its inevitable downward spiral, we are happy to report that it is in his honor--not his memory--that we are walking again. ALS is a terrible disease--and unfortunately, one that we hear about all too often.
We are walking in the 13th Annual Les Turner ALS Walk4Life on Sunday, September 21, 2014 at Soldier Field in Chicago. Our walk raises critically needed dollars for the Les Turner ALS Foundation patient services, research and public awareness. The Foundation resources have made this difficult experience a little bit easier for Paul and his family. Paul wants his friends to do the walk to show support for the Foundation that has helped him.
Please consider a donation and please consider joining our team: Paul Launer's Iron Horse Brigade.
On behalf of Paul and the many families affected by ALS, thank you for your support and helping to make a difference!
