BENEFITING: AGAPE WOMENS MINISTRY INC
Following fifteen years of civil war in Liberia, it remains a country still in need of vast resources. Basic healthcare infrastructure is missing and is greatly needed in order to revitalize and rebuild society. Children are affected the most by this resource gap and this in turn, affects their ability to grow up to be productive citizens in society. The HEART Project - Agape Women’s Ministry, in collaboration with Healthy Nation is working to provide preventive health services to children/families, filling an ever-growing gap in the healthcare system in Liberia. We are working to provide the following resources: Menstrual Health & Hygiene Assistance and Monthly Wellness Checkup. MENSTRUAL HEALTH & HYGIENE INIATIVE - The education of girls in Liberia is undermined, and in some cases, derailed by the absence of adequate resources for menstrual health and hygiene. An unacceptable number of girls miss at least two days of school on average monthly because of their menses. A February 2014 survey of 738 middle and high school girls conducted in Monrovia and Paynesville, Liberia, revealed that the average girl misses at least two days of school each month because of challenges related to her menstrual cycle. The primary reasons for such high absenteeism include: lack of access to feminine products; lack of access to under garments; lack of access to pain medications or other types of medications related to their cycle. This reality poses a clear danger to each girl. It undermines their safety and health. Girls who lack personal hygiene products often resolve to using primitive materials (cloths, or any other type of materials they can find) to get by each month. This exposes them to infections and other health related challenges. Additionally, it leads to a very high rate of absenteeism, which leads to poor academic performance and a high rate of dropouts among girls. Moreover, girls are targeted by unscrupulous male teachers for sexual favors in exchange for make-up work on exams and other class requirements. MONTHLY WELLNESS CHECKUPS - conduct monthly physical screenings to children and families who cannot afford this service on their own. Through Agape’s collaboration with Healthy Nation, it will cost only $20 annually to secure a child’s health needs. This will include regular exams, medications as needed, and vaccines. So how can you help? THE NEED: We need you! The needs of these children and girls are great. We are asking for your donation to help facilitate these programs and the costs associated with running them annually. The adage “IT TAKES A VILLAGE” is true now more than ever, and we are asking our village to come alongside us and help us raise up a generation of leaders who can make a difference in their society because someone (YOU) made a difference in theirs.
