THE STORY:

As most of you are aware, my family spent our Christmas holidays volunteering in Greece doing humanitarian work for the refugee crisis. It changed my life. Through the power of social media, I was offered funding do more work for refugees. This time, I chose to come to Izmir, Turkey. Here I am working with a new, grass-roots organization called REVI. We work in small teams of 4 people, including one Arabic-speaking translator. During the day we visit families in their homes, doing intake on their situation and needs, learning their stories and trying to help them in any way we can. They are mostly in need of basic things; food, fuel for cooking and heating, milk for the babies, diapers and clothing for the children. While we love to help and provide aid, our aim is to identify any skills they might have, find ways for them to earn money and help themselves. We have bought a sewing machine for a woman to make dresses and sell, another group of women are learning how to knit sweaters and hats for children. There are ideas for a group to make cloth diapers and also to create a diaper washing service. In addition, we have recently rented a house where we will start a school. All of these children have lost years of education. Most, on average, seem to be 5 years behind (when the war started in Syria). For the youngest children, it would be best if possible, for them to be in a Turkish public school as they are at an age where they can be easily integrated. For the older children, this is much more difficult and we hope to provide both Arabic and Turkish teaching. We will employ Syrian teachers in the neighborhood who are without work. We need your help! Currently we need funds for all sorts of things, here is a list of the major items: food baby formula diapers paint for the school construction materials for the bathroom and kitchen renovations Pencils, pens and notebooks backpacks for the children a small refrigerator for the school snacks art supplies rugs for the school small tables and chairs for the school lighting sewing machine washer/dryer cloth yarn knitting needles Please help us show them the goodness, kindness and generosity of humanity. Help Us Help Them.
