Jennifer Britt lives in Detroit's Grandmont Rosedale neighborhood with her mother, uncle, daughter and son. After her husband Leon died in 2006, she struggled to make her high mortgage payments. Jennifer paid over $45,000 to the bank to avoid foreclosure. She lost her job in 2008, began missing payments, and the bank foreclosed on her. By the time Jennifer managed to get two part-time jobs and tried to resume making mortgage payments, the bank refused to talk to her.

Earlier this year Jennifer brought her story to Occupy Detroit's Eviction Defense Committee, a coalition of community activists that work to fight back against the wave of unjust foreclosures and evictions that has ravaged Detroit. After months of organizing and protesting, Jennifer has finally reached a settlement that will allow her to keep her home.

But Jennifer needs to raise $6,500 to close the deal, and she needs it by Friday, October 5th. We are asking for everyone who supports the struggle to put people before banks to contribute what they can to this cause. Together we can prevent a heartless and unnecessary eviction.

Foreclosures and evictions only hurt our communities. Detroit doesn't need more empty houses or more people without homes. Every time a person fights back against foreclosure and wins, it helps build our struggle to save our neighborhoods and put an end to foreclosures and evictions.

Jennifer's story has received coverage from The Huffington Post, Business Insider, and many other news outlets. Read these articles for more details on her struggle:
