The Jack Project is an initiative of the Jack Windeler Memorial Fund at Kids Help Phone. The project is the legacy of Jack Windeler who in March 2010, as a first-year student at Queen’s University, tragically and unexpectedly died by suicide. Examining Jack’s death revealed a (1) the risk and vulnerability inherent in the ‘transition’ life stage for youth aged 15-20 (2) the barriers to help and lack of accessible, coordinated care faced by this specific demographic, and (3) the huge opportunity and life-long benefit of facilitating and developing early intervention and support for those facing mental health problems. With a powerful vision of enabling every Canadian youth (age 15-20) to achieve and sustain optimal mental wellness, the mission of The Jack Project is to support these youth as they transition from high school into their years of college, university or independent living. We will achieve this through two major initiatives designed to build, unite and strengthen existing support structures across key environments where youth spend the most time, and where the most significant impact can be made – online and in school.
