THE STORY:

Joe Torre Safe At Home reaches children who are exposed to violence in their homes, schools, and communities. Safe At Home’s violence intervention and prevention program, Margaret’s Place, provides middle and high school students with a safe room to talk about domestic violence with a professional counselor and their peers. In these rooms, Master’s-level counselors provide services to youth that include:

Individual & group counseling

Psychoeducational workshops

Crisis intervention

Peer leadership programs

School-wide awareness campaigns

Violence prevention curriculum

Outreach for parents and staff

To date, we have reached over 50,000 students through our 11 Margaret's Place sites located in public schools and community-based organizations throughout metropolitan New York and Los Angeles. Over 21,000 of these students have received counseling services. Students have reported that because of the counseling they received at Margaret’s Place:

93% of the students said that they feel safer

85% of students said that it is easier to talk to someone instead of keeping things to themselves

96% of students said that they feel more confident and have better self-esteem

98% of students said that they are more hopeful about their future.

One of our goals is to empower youth and the adults in their life to be able to identify signs of unhealthy relationships and know how to get help. We have found that many Margaret’s Place participants do not know about financial abuse. Educating our students, their families, and school personnel about financial abuse, how to recognize its signs, and how to get help, is critical. The presence of financial abuse often indicates that other types of abuse are occurring or that the abuse may escalate in the future. Our program offers financial empowerment programming to students, parents, and school staff.  Your generosity through the Purple Purse Challenge will help us ensure that these programs can be delivered to the students, parents and school staff that need it most.

Through our model of education and supportive services, combined with creating a safe and nurturing environment, Safe At Home is breaking the cycle of violence.
