Saving Lives

Our mission is to build basic swimming skills and knowledge of water safety to prevent drowning and water related injury.

On August 6, 2006, John-Joshua Butts, affectionately known as "Josh" went to Bird Lake in Hilldale County Michigan with some friends.  At the lake, Josh was no doubt enjoying the water and his friends when the small raft that he was floating on, drifted into deep water.  Josh was 16 years old.  He had never had a swimming lesson, and he wasn't wearing a life jacket.

His mother Wanda Butts, was researching "drowning" on the internet when she came across the USA Swimming Foundation's website.  Determined not to let Josh's death to be in vain, she asked them to help her start a learn to swim program in Toledo, Oh.  The following summer the Josh Project program taught over 150 kids how to swim and over 1200 students have participated in the program  ever since 2007.

In 2012, The Josh Project joined the Consumer Protection Safety Council's PoolSafely campaign and Butts traveled to Ft. Laurderdale with Chairman Inez Tennenbaum to promote the "Simple Steps Saves Lives" initiative.

In addtion, Butts was named a Top Ten CNN Hero of 2012 for her work to prevemt drowning and provide affordable swimming lessons and water safety education to at-risk youth and their families.

Drowning is preventable if children learn how to swim and know how to be safe while in and around water.  Accidents will continue to happen but they aren't inevitable.

With your help, and that of your friends we will be able to make an even greater impact in our community and around the world.

The Josh Project would like to build a survival swimming program that can duplicated around the country.

Will you help?
