THE STORY:

March of Dimes Iowa wrote -

We are honored to be serving as this year's Ambassador family for the Sioux City Signature Chefs Auction. Our hope is to raise $2500 to present to the March of Dimes towards their $26,000 goal.

Here is our story:

We were thrilled to find out that we were pregnant just before Christmas in 2012. Just a month later, we were elated to find out that we were expecting twins.

Outside of some minor complications early on in the pregnancy, everything was picture perfect. I was due August 30th. At the beginning of June, we were excited to be moving into our new home, and were anxiously awaiting June 21st– when our cribs and other baby furniture was due to arrive. But on Tuesday, June 12th, everything changed.

I was headed to the hospital to have my glucose test. After having had some contractions the day before, Dr. Hunt opted to have me come upstairs to complete my test and monitor me. When the nurse hooked me up to the contraction monitor, they discovered that my contractions were actually 2-3 minutes apart. They started me on magnesium to try to stop the contractions and labor so that they could administer steroid shots to help develop the babies’ lungs. Fortunately, the contractions stopped a few days later, and I was able to be weaned off of the magnesium, but was told I would remain in the hospital until their birth.

On Monday, June 17th, after little overnight sleep, my water broke and I was having more contractions, and it was clear that delivery was imminent. Alex had already left for work, and he arrived just in time for the C-section. At only 29 weeks gestation, Ava Josephine was born weighing 2 lbs, 13.5 oz, and Alex James followed minutes later at 2 lbs, 12.4 oz. They were whisked off to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, where they would remain for the next 53 days. I’ve never felt so helpless as I did watching my tiny babies through glass while they grew, learned to feed and control their breathing.

Ava and Alex are now over a year old, and we are so blessed. While they are behind on the growth chart and still developing their gross motor development, they are doing well. We’re honored to share our story to not only give others hope, but to share the amazing work that the March of Dimes does every day.

Without the advancements in premature birth afforded by funding through the March of Dimes, our story may have had a very different ending. Together with the March of Dimes, we’re working towards a day where every baby is born healthy.
