Currently, the statistics show that 22 veterans kill themselves a day. Due to a lack of care from the VA as well as society, veterans are finding no other choice than to end their lives. For a while we would say to ourselves, "someone should do something about that" and then we realized we are “someone."
“The Keep” is a dream by a combat veteran and a close friend to help fellow veterans as well as anyone else that feels the need to "disconnect" from society for a bit. The plan is to build a "human sanctuary" up in the mountains of western North Carolina. The sanctuary will have various living arrangements (hobbit holes, tree houses, etc) as well as a small farm.
Visitors to “The Keep” will have the option of helping on the farm, assisting with animal care, or just doing their own thing. The sites we have scouted to build our sanctuary are secluded and near national forests which will allow visitors to explore and truly "get away" from it all. However, for those seeking to connect with others we will also offer group classes as well as introduce visitors to local attractions and activities should they seek an outside adventure.
Consistent with our mission, “The Keep” will operate on a donation basis, allowing veterans and our non-veteran visitors to come and visit as they need to, even if they find themselves in the midst of financial struggle.
We are trying to raise money to start building the sanctuary, file for non-profit status, and any other miscellaneous expense that rises up as we begin this journey. We feel it important to mention that all materials and services used to build this safe haven will come from local sources. Your donation will be your hands helping to not only build this sanctuary but support the locals who contribute their time and resources to help us make the dream a reality.
