BENEFITING: The Kelly Gibson Foundation
ORGANIZER: The Kelly Gibson Foundation
EVENT DATE: Apr 04, 2015
Throughout the formative years of my life, there's a lot of words you could've used to describe me - but athletic? Definitively not one of them (sorry Coach Tovar). Then a few funny things happened on my educational journey down in the Big Easy:
1) I stopped consuming a nightly diet of an Upland Wheat 6-pack and a Big Ten pizza special and/or Kilroy's pepperoni breadsticks.
2) I got involved with a great organization called Youth Run Nola.
Quick background: started by a couple of my friends (who were also teachers), Youth Run Nola inspires kids to lead a healthy lifestyle through running. It's not about being the fastest (which I definitively am not), but really about inspiring yourself to accomplish goals one step at a time.
Throughout the years, I've been involved in Youth Run Nola in a variety of capacities - a running buddy with kids, data guru, a guy helping their financial systems get set up, and now, a board member. One constant throughout all of those ventures is the realization that if I want to be a part of a program that inspires kids to lead a healthy lifestyle, then I first have to start with inspiring myself. And so, I began to run. Slowly. Really more of a brisk light-to-medium, sometimes heavy, jog.
And now, on April 4th, I'm shooting for an all time personal best - the Crescent City Classic 10k!!! Each year, the Crescent City Classic dominates the city of New Orleans and also serves as the capstone event for Youth Run Nola for which kids train for (that's actually how Youth Run Nola was started - a teacher and students setting a goal to run this race).
Not only am I currently in training mode (cue epic rocky-style montage), but I'm also participating as a "Charity Runner". The gist is simple - I'm running in the Crescent City classic to: a) fulfill a personal long-time goal for myself; and, b) to support Youth Run Nola (which is where you're support comes into play!).
As a "Charity Runner", I've set a goal of raising at least $750 to support Youth Run Nola, which will goes towards items like shoes, equipment, and race gear to help support and inspire future students to run a healthy lifestyle through running.
I'd greatly appreciate your support in two possible ways:
1) Directly support me as a Charity Runner by clicking and donating here. Disclaimer #1:every donation counts, no matter how big or small - just like every step forward after the next counts (come on, you didn't think you'd get one whole e-mail without a cheesy line from me did you?). Disclaimer #2 - it says I'm supporting the Kelly Gibson Foundation which is serving as a philanthropic pass-through for this event..
2) Forwarding this along to other people who are interested in supporting the cause!
Every donation/forward/casual reference to a friend helps support what I genuinely believe is a great cause. I've been able to see Youth Run Nola first hand inspire both students all across New Orleans, as well as myself, which is why I'm forever proud to support such a great organization.
Keep on running and thank you in advance for your support,
