The Laramie Project
Organized by: Bridget Poindexter
AnyStage Theatre Company is presenting, "The Laramie Project" January 8th and 9th. In 1998, Matthew Shepard was a 21 year old gay University of Wyoming student who was tied to a fence in a secluded area and beaten by two young men in an apparent hate crime. The case attracted worldwide attention, and the media descended upon the small town of Laramie, Wyoming. During this time, the members of a theater group based in New York City became interested in the story and decided to visit Laramie for themselves. For over a year, they met with residents of Laramie, as well as local police and first responders, friends and family of the victim and the suspects, and students from the university. Using only the transcripts from those interviews and public records, The Laramie Project was written.
