BENEFITING: ASOCIACION MAYAB
Dear friends, relatives, allies and community
The Maya Diaspora in Northern California is by far one of the largest and more diverse indigenous immigrant communities in the US. Decades ago the first immigrants from Guatemala and Mexico arrived into San Francisco and started what is now a vibrant still growing community and a strong connection between cities and towns across northern California and villages and smalls towns all over Mexico, the Yucatan Peninsula and Central America. We think the time has come for our own community to tell the world about our experience, our culture, our struggles and victories. Over the summer, Maya writer and teacher Ana Patricia Martinez Huchim will visit us from Yucatan and help us collect stories and tales of individuals and communities that tell the story of the Mayan diaspora in California. From the Fruitvale district in Oakland to the Canal District in San Rafael and from Half Moon Bay to the Mission District in San Francisco, written testimony, photos, video and other objects will help us tell and share with the world our word!
We need your help to cover expenses such as recording devices, travel and consultant fees for Professor Ana Patricia as well as to curate materials and to compile them all into an illustrated book that then we can publish and share with our community and you all!
