Beginning July 22nd, 2010, I am biking from Vancouver, BC to Winnipg, MB to raise money for The Shanti Uganda Society. Shanti Uganda is a non-profit organization and registered Canadian Charity that aims to improve the physical, emotional and spiritual well being of communities impacted by war, poverty, and HIV/AIDS in Uganda. One of their community development projects is their a women's income generating group, where they provide skills and business training to a group of creative, HIV+ women in either Jewelry, Textiles, or both. You should see what these incredible women can do! They turn recycled paper into beautiful beads that look like glass, and create bags out of fabric from the local village of Kasana. Collectively, the current group of 27 women care for over 170 children and grandchildren. Since the project began, all of these children have been enrolled in school! These women ride their bikes (donated by Shanti Uganda) to and from their workstation in the roundhut by the maternity center, training days, and for their daily errands. I will ride my bike across Canada to raise awareness for this inspiring group, and hopefully raise enough money to support the income generating project to continue providing its members with ongoing education and support.
