I will be bicycling from NY to Boston on July 5th and 6th to raise funds for The Open Door of NJ/NY (TOD). TOD empowers immigrants to reach their God-given potential to successfully integrate, participate, and contribute to the well-being of our society. This is a 2 day challenge covering over 240 miles. The goal is to raise $10,000. One hundred percent of your contributions will go towards expanding the programs. This includes purchasing books, computers and supplies.
The Open Door services include English classes, legal and immigration advisory. This Spring TOD enrolled 310 students and had a waiting list of over 100. The 310 students were placed into 10 classes. Students represent 17 Latin countries, China, Turkey and Russia. This fall TOD will add an additional 4 classes increasing the total to 12. New locations and classes are under development with our latest partners which will expand the program even more.
The Open Door was founded in 2010 to address the unmet needs of the immigrant community. According to the 2010 census, nearly 83% of West New York residents speak very limited or no English, which makes facing the urban challenges of poverty, unemployment, and poor school performance all the more daunting.
The Open Door NY/NJ gives immigrants the tools they need to grow into strong, contributing members of society. Our beginnings showed that people given a chance to learn language and culture will respond enthusiastically.
To help our neighbors, we offer English classes, support groups designed to strengthen the family, and inspirational talks. Our efforts are to enable students to better communicate with their families and within their community. We are helping to connect, support, engage and encourage families. The program includes an assembly time after class that discusses pertinent topics, such as community building, loneliness, and responding to witnessing crime (including domestic violence). There is also children’s program available which offers help with homework, arts and crafts, activities, and values based teaching and story time. We walk with immigrants throughout their journey, offering progressive classes and one-on-one guidance when possible, designed to help individuals learn, grow, and thrive.
The Open Door sees the impact of their leadership every day. A father’s salary increase because of his improved English skills. A mother, able to talk to her child’s teacher for the first time. The Open Door commits to walk with our neighbors until they can thrive in the English-speaking mainstream, and we rejoice as they reach their God-given potential.
