THE STORY:

The Foundation working with local housing agencies identifies housing needs for permanent supportive Veteran housing. The Patriots Housing Foundation will either purchase suitable properties for rent or build homes for rent. “ “Another primary challenge of Veterans housing is a lack of decent, affordable homes with amenable landlords.

Permanent housing is the #1 unmet needs identified by homeless Veterans.

With an estimated 340,000 homeless veterans the problem is at crisis levels.

A prolonged housing search puts at risk Veterans trust and commitment to sticking with the program.

More than 1.5 million Veterans pay more than 50% of their income for housing (which is a severe cost burden).

Women Veterans have greater homelessness risks than male Veterans, and their homeless numbers are rising.

 Nearly 1 million Veterans who own homes are severely burdened by the cost, despite having access to VA loans and other assistance.

 Veterans with a severe housing cost burden are more likely to have a disability than other Veterans.

 Among Veterans, women are more likely to experience a severe cost burden than men.

 Nearly 4 million Veteran households spend more than 40% of their income for housing.

 26% of post-9/11 Veterans and 14% of all Veterans have a service-connected disability.

 Between 2000 and 2011, more than 233,000 service members had a traumatic brain injury.

 67,495 Veterans were homeless (unsheltered and sheltered) on a given night in 2011.

 144,842 Veterans were among the sheltered homeless (in emergency or transitional housing) in 2010.

 Veterans aged 18 to 30 are more than twice as likely to be homeless compared with non-Veterans of the same age.

 Half of newly homeless Veterans were discharged less than three years earlier.

 The number of homeless women Veterans increased 141% between 2006 and 2010.

 Women Veterans have more than twice the homelessness rate of non-Veteran women.
