Close your eyes...well keep them open...but try to visualize this situation for a moment.
You've just moved to New York City. Maybe you've moved from Bangladesh, maybe Cote d'Ivoire. Maybe even from somewhere geographically closer, say, the Dominican Republic. Regardless, you are new to this enormous city. The language is new, your neighbors are new, getting from place to place is new. It can be intimidating and frustrating and difficult.
But what if you got to know this new life through a friendship with a local? What if a program was in place at your school that paired you with an open-minded young New York professional who was just dying to show you the NYC ropes? Someone to teach you the subway, take you to the city's cultural institutions, share a slice of iconic NY pizza, and open your eyes to the depth of possibilities the city can offer.
We find that these friendships help. They get the participants of Tagai, newly immigrated students at the International Community High Schools of New York, quickly on successful tracks. Students adjust to the city, work harder in school, and are given the opportunity to flourish in their new settings. We work together to help students find success in this new chapter in their lives.
It's not a one way relationship. Mentors also benefit from a new cultural experience and perhaps see the city a different way than before.
We are a small but important organization touching the lives 40 kids. We have big dreams of growing and getting to share this opportunity with more students. We are 100% volunteer run and supported and we are looking to our friends, family, and people we haven't even met yet to help us raise our goal of $20,000. Your gifts will help us to fund group events, buy metro cards, and of course, get together over pizza. As we have no staff or offices, our only operating costs directly involve our mentors and mentees.
Your gift of $25 buys a large pizza, which after an afternoon of iceskating (sometimes the first time ever iceskating) is a delicious treat.
Your gift of $50 covers paints and brushes for group activities that encourage creativity and artistic expression.
Your gift of $100 can help offset costs associated with mentor development. We organize specialized trainings during the year to help mentors discover new ways of working with their mentees.
Your gift of $200 covers the subway to and from group events for all of the Tagai mentees. School subsidized metro cards only work on weekdays. Becoming comfortable riding the subway helps our students lead more independent lives and enhances their New York City experience.
Your gift of $500 would help to support group fitness activities, like a yoga class. Exposing mentees to completely new and healthy experiences is one of our core responsibilities.
Your gift of $1,000 could send our group to attend a concert at BAM and help mentees find inspiration through classical music.
As you can see we have a lot of exciting things to explore with our students, and a lot of pizza to share. Please help us help us raise crucial funds to support the operation of the Tagai Mentorship Program. Your gift of any amount helps us towards our goal!
