On April 22, 2018, we are running the Bend Marathon in memory of my mom, Kelly Kearney Gibbons, and all the good she brought into this world and continues to leave through people's memory of her.
For this race, we are going the extra mile (well, actually many, many miles). We are running for the Send It Foundation. The mission of Send It is to inspire positivity, courage and gratitude in young adult cancer fighters through the gift of outdoor adventure and community.
Kelly was a firm believer in it's not what you say, but what you do. In honor of her, we are going to commit to raise money and run 26.2 miles to be agents of change in a young adult cancer fighter's life.
After her passing in February, 2013, I have been committed to raising awareness and funds for cancer research, treatments, and for those families in the cancer fight. It’s hard to imagine that she's been gone 5 years now. As time passes, I only become more deliberate in my efforts to keep her alive in my daily moments, thoughts, and actions.
My mother had an incredible warmth about her and fire within her. She lived passionately every day, and made sure that we were loved fiercely. She showed kindness and compassion to everyone, and was the ultimate giver in time, energy, and love.
Running gives me time and space with my Mom. She wasn't much of a runner, but I know she flies with me now on my runs. I see her in the long lines of painted trees that cover the roads or in the birds soaring above me in the fall sky. I meet her in my thoughts and find that in the hours I spend out on the trails, I feel a calmness with her around me. Life can be so busy, and it is in these moments, these moments I cherish so deeply, that I find peace and calm with my Mom.
The Queen's Army has been running since 2013 and this year we've chosen again to support . Their mission and values are dear to my heart, and a daily reminder to live life to the fullest each day - to live hard, love hard, and that each day is an incredible gift. Send It!!
