Dear Family and Friends,
As many of you know, I have had OCD since I was 6 or 7 years old, although it has gotten much better in recent years. The type I have is sometimes called “Just Right” OCD. I used to get anxious when conversations didn’t sound right to me, or if someone didn’t answer questions the “right” way, or they interrupted a conversation. Then, I would repeat myself, over and over, and often get angry too. Basically, I got in my head too much. This caused even more anxiety, that led to more repeating behaviors.
By taking medication and going to therapy, I have learned to manage my OCD. Occasionally it “flares up”, but my doctor taught me and my family strategies that I can use when it gets triggered. I also know that I can go back to therapy when I need it, which isn’t a bad thing. I do still take medication, but it has been reduced, and eventually I hope to stop that completely too.
It can be lonely sometimes, when people think you just need to “stop worrying”. Maybe sharing my story will help others who have OCD, anxiety, or other mental illnesses to talk about their situation and get help. Thank you for supporting this cause- raising money for research for Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, but more importantly, talking openly in support of people who suffer from mental illness.
Thank you for your support!
