Since the tragic events of 9/11, our military members and now veterans have deployed more than ever before in history while our silent warriors – our military spouses – continue to hold down the home front, much like the iconic “Rosie the Riveter” during WWII. Due to the high cost of living, 8 out of 10 spouses have stated they need to work to support their families. But, despite their sacrifices, the unemployment rate for military spouses rose to 30% in 2013, more than twice the national average. This combined with the need to move every 2 to 3 years makes traditional employment a challenge despite the fact that our military spouses and veterans hold higher levels of education, yet are paid 28% less for the same job of their civilian counterparts.
Entrepreneurship opens up a world of opportunities for our military families and this is where the Rosie Network comes in. The Rosie Network, founded in 2012 by US Navy SEAL spouses, today promotes over 1,200 veteran and military spouse owned small businesses through our highly successful showcase events, free business training, small business grants, mentorship and Rosie’s List – our online search tool featuring the products & services provided by our military member businesses as the data shows these individuals make great entrepreneurs.
By empowering the financial and emotional stability of our military families, we are investing in the quality of life and resiliency of those who have already given so much and cultivating the next generation of entrepreneurs and CEOs.
