The Secret Garden, located in the Hilltop neighborhood of Wilmington is a thriving place where, in any given season, children ranging in age from one to four have a secure outdoor place to learn. At a very basic level, the children study plant biology, nutrition, edible landscapes, ecology, soils and compost, the water cycle, and their favorite...insects, especially worms! Loyal DCH volunteers have been going to this garden for over 16 years impacting the lives of hundreds of these children from low income families.
The garden is in needs improvement. In the fall 2012, the gardens water source was restored, a derelict storage shed was taken away, an overgrown tree, blocking sunlight, and persistent weeds were removed.
With the volunteer support of a local landscape designer the garden will be reconfigured and redesigned to include classroom space, a vegetable garden, potting bench, birdhouses, and regraded to address stormwater runoff issues.
We are looking for financial support to help purchase supplies for the garden's redesign.
