BENEFITING: THE SENTENCING PROJECT
With 2.3 million people behind bars, the United States has the highest incarceration rate in the world. Yup, that means that we incarcerate more people per capita than any other country on earth. As a result, we have 5% of the world’s population but 25% of the world’s prison population.
We think something is terribly wrong with this picture. And, it gets worse...
Largely due to the 'war on drugs,' mass incarceration disproportionately impacts racial minorities, nearly half of all prisoners in state prisons are locked up for nonviolent offenses, and this all comes at a high cost to taxpayers (50 billion a year!) and incalculable social costs.
Evidence shows that large-scale incarceration is not the most effective means of achieving public safety. Allie has spent the past few years studying this issue in school and working in the field, she has seen first hand more cost effective and just ways of promoting public safety. Knowing this, do we really want to live in a society that locks up more of its people than any other country on earth?
Please join us in helping change the way our nation thinks about crime and punishment by supporting The Sentencing Project. The Sentencing project is a national organization working for a fair and effective criminal justice system by promoting reforms in sentencing law and practice, and alternatives to incarceration. It does this through research, media campaigns and strategic advocacy for policy reform.
