BENEFITING: MEDIA FOR CHANGE
We at Media for Change feel that basic American values enshrined in the Constitution are being tried. Our project American Basic aims to work with emerging filmmakers to initiate conversations between Americans from different walks of life to learn from each other about American values and about what is important today. Short films that emerge from this effort will be shared openly and widely.
We are starting this effort because we feel that in the digital age it has become more difficult to engage with people beyond our own circles. Increasingly, we are comfortable within the confines and comfort of people who are like ourselves in their interests and beliefs. We are trying to address this deficit by initiating conversations among folks who may not otherwise have the opportunity to have any meaningful exchanges about beliefs, values, convictions and what is important for America and Americans today.
We will reach out to the emerging filmmaking community through social media marketing. Interested filmmakers will identify an individual in their community who they will follow and document in his/her quest for a meaningful conversation with a stranger. Applicants will submit a short pitch of their idea for consideration. 10 best pitches from around the country will be selected for production.
Filmmakers will be paid, with the funds raised, for their work.
The shorts will be promoted through social media channels and responses from audiences will also be recorded and shared.
Based on the success of this proof of concept project, we will scale up through support from foundations, grants and individuals.
Please join us in creating and sharing conversations around the country about what it means to be American in the 21st century.
