The Story Portal is building a professional storytelling stage to take to festivals such as Apogaea and Burning Man.
The Story Portal aims to connect individuals to the vast world of shared experience through spontaneous and true storytelling. The concept is simple - spin the wheel and tell us a story about the topic it lands on. Topics are things like 'when it all changed', 'all in the family', 'my first time' or 'overcoming fear'.
Story Wheel Topic Panel - Overcoming Fear
The story stage acts as a forum for the audience to actively listen and the storyteller to be fully heard. By creating this dynamic, The Story Portal facilitates the space to illuminate connections and shared experience of all involved.
We have built a variety of story wheels over the last 12 months. Most recently we took a beautiful hand-crafted 'price-is-right' style wheel to the Burning Man festival in the Nevada desert. The project was a raving success. We had real-life true storytellers come through to spin the wheel day and night. Due to the great demand for the project we are now building a full stage production for our story wheel. This stage will be a time machine in a steampunk motif. It is fully interactive and makes the storyteller the star of the show.
Burning Man 2012
We have assembled a top-notch team of set designers, carpenters, digital artists, project planners and most importantly people passionate about the power story has to affect change in communities. Members of our team have had incredible success with a variety of projects, including projects The Story Portal has seen to successful fruition over the past year.
Our build crew is already hard at work!
We have a proven track record of success. We have begun our build for this latest Story Portal project using funds raised from a $1,000 grant as well as smaller donations. But this Kickstarter campaign and your contributions is what will make this project possible. We are still in need of money to cover more building materials, transportation costs, generators, fuel, lighting and visual and audio technology.

What we are building is very ambitious. The scale is large at 18' tall, 40' wide and 20' deep. The vision for the stage production is of the highest professional quality. It is not something just anyone could set out to build.
This is why we have assembled a team of people who are the best at what they do.
1. Our build manager, Andy Jalving, has over 20 years experience building sets and large sculpture. He most recently built the Colorado Burning Man core effigy project - The Dragon Lotus. This sculpture was hailed as one of the finest core projects at Burning Man in 2012.
2. Our project managers have all been working as professional project managers and team facilitators for a combined total of 35 years. They bring skills to the table that are generally reserved for top executives. The same efficient project management techniques that the most successful companies use are being applied to this project. Our project management team consists of Ronica Roth, Amy Zuckerman and Robert Rhu.
3. Our core build crew is comprised of professional carpenters with many years experience. These people are who make the build possible and their vast experience insure that this project will happen safely and beautifully.
4. This project requires lots of engineering know how. This is both for the structural integrity of the set as well as constructing the story wheel. Our wheel is essentially a machine and as such requires a well thought engineering plan. Our engineer, Sam Ley, has years of professional engineering experience both working on real-world engineering problems that affect your day-to-day life as well as technically challenging art projects.
