The Sylvia Brent Elliott Memorial Scholarship
Organized by: Samantha Briggs
Sylvia Brent Elliott wrote her final memoir in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Masters of Fine Arts in Fiction from the University of Alabama -- a degree that was completed and conferred by The University at her hospice bedside just days before she transitioned.
It was a rare sarcoma cancer that claimed the life of my mother only seven weeks after being diagnosed—however it is the rare spirit of a loving and self-sacrificing woman who often identified herself as a “gypsy” due to her wise yet whimsical care-free lifestyle that claimed the heart of all whom she encountered.
It is in her spirit that I, along with my brothers Marcus and Adam, provide this glimpse into the life, the experience, and the energy of our mother and ask that you join us in preserving her legacy and her love of knowledge through a gift that keeps on giving.
The Sylvia Brent Elliott Memorial Scholarship fund was established at The University of Alabama in the fall of 2005 in response to the unexpected death of my mother, Sylvia Althea Brent Elliott. Over the past 9 years generous donors have made faithful contributions and the fund has finally been endowed by The University at the "gift" level and can begin giving small, one-time gifts to students for merit or travel. However, with a minimum addition of $5,000 to the fund, the endowment can reach scholarship level and can award deserving non-traditional under-represented minority students financial assistance towards their tuition, room, board and/or books.
Please consider helping us reach this goal and preserve my mother's legacy with a gift of education. Should you prefer making a donation directly to The University of Alabama, please feel free to contact me directly at firstname.lastname@example.org and I will forward that information to you.
Thank you in advance!
I came of age at a time to be the "first," unthreatened, unafraid, and unstoppable. --Sylvia Elliott
