Caring for our Trees
The TREE Fund's mission is to fund research, scholarships, and kids' education programs in order to discover and disseminate new knowledge in arboriculture (the science of cultivating and caring for trees) and urban forestry. Our foundation has distributed more than $6 million to date, in the form of scholarships to students and research grants to scientists. Knowledge gained from more than 400 TREE Fund research grants since 1976 has improved tree care practices, people’s lives, and arborists’ safety every day. Here are a few examples: Improved public safety and electric service reliability by scientifically determining which trees have the greatest potential to cause property damage, electrical outages, or a wildfire. Minimized damage caused by bark beetles and invasive ‘exotic’ pests (such as the emerald ash borer and Asian longhorned beetle) by studying ways to control diseases and pests. Reduced pesticide and mechanical interventions, achieved by proving the value of integrated pest management (which takes advantage of the tree’s natural characteristics and surroundings to fight pests and diseases).
