THE STORY:

On 2/25/15 Nicole was admitted to Abbott to have a Chiari Malformation repair, it consist of a craniotomy, laminectomy ands duraplasty. Every thing seemed to have gone very well after the first day was over. Nicole was discharged home and seemed to be doing well. After being home for 5 days Nicole was having extreme pain and felt like her entire head was in a vice grip. Due to the pain Chris brought Nicole to the ER, after arriving Nicole was admitted to the hospital and was diagnosed with meningitis. Everyone's heart sank, and fear rose fast. Nicole had a PICC line placed and started on very strong antibiotics along with pain mess. After 10 days of minor procedures, medications, blood draws and scans Nicole was sent home to do IV antibiotic therapy at home. 5 days after being home Nicole's home care nurse came to follow up and see how she was doing. Nicole thought she was doing ok, when all reality she wasn't. Nicole was running a fever of over 102.0 along with multiple neurological symptoms. Along with the multiple issues Nicole could not keep anything in hers stomach and she started have a large pocket of fluid in the surgical site. That Friday evening the home care nurse called Chris's and informed him that Nicole's team of Drs wanted her to go to the ER now. Nicole arrived to Abbott, in which they were waiting for her, and was informed that she was being admitted Indefinatly, which brought a huge amount of fear to her and her family. During that stay Nicole had multiple scans, blood draws, medications and procedures. Nicole had to have a lumbar drain placed which caused complete bed rest which caused her to be at a constant 15-30 degree angle while the drain was placed, the fluid at the surgical site was also drained, but within 24 hrs the fluid returned. After having the drain for 6 days it was decided Nicole needed to go back in for another brain surgery. While Nicole has been fighting this battle she has been very positive. After the second surgery Nicole was on complete bed rest with another lumbar drain. When the lumbar drain was pulled Nicole had to learn to walk again, and has had to work to regain her strength. Nicole and her family expected to be out of work for 4-6 weeks, instead it's been over 3 months with no date of possible return to work.
