BENEFITING: Somaly Mam Foundation
I have always known about this horrible crime going on not only in our country but countries all over the world, since I was a young girl living in Southeast Asia. I always had the someday attitude, that someday I would have the time or money to do something about it and it's not about money or time, it's about passion and motivation and letting your voice be heard, so that someday for me is now.
Children being exploited for commercial sex is wrong no matter what country you are in. Human trafficking is a term that generally can be described as the recruitment, transportation, transfer, harboring, or receipt of persons, this is a modern form of slavery. Victims of trafficking are subject to rape, forced abortions, torture, and threats to family members. Of the women being used as commercial sex slave millions of them are children. Children should be children enjoying life and doing what children do, not working as sex slaves.
Here are so me statistics:
2 million: the number of children exploited in by global commercial sex trade
$32 billion: annual profits generated by human trafficking industry
$9.7 billion: profits reaped in Asia
27 million: number of people in modern day slavery across the world
12-14 years: average age of entry into forced prostitution
Somaly Mam is from Cambodia and was sold into the sex trade at age 12. She was forced into a life of abuse, rape, torture and endured so much at such a young age. Somaly escaped the industry and began her work in Cambodia, rescuing and rehabilitating survivors, many of them children. The Somaly Mam Foundation raises awareness and funds to support survivor rescue, shelter, and rehabilitation globally with a special focus on Southeast Asia where girls as young as five are sold into sexual slavery.
