After traveling in 2010 I brought home an unwanted souvenir - a whole lot of extra weight. I've been home for six months and still need to lose 10 of those unwanted pounds.
When contemplating diets and options for losing those final pounds I found that no one has willpower for sale, which is really all I need. It hit me one day, I can't stop eating, while some people can't start eating because they have no food. What I've seen in Africa changed me - check out my story.
It’s estimated that 925 million people around the globe go hungry every day. They go without, which is exactly what I need to do. If I cut Starbucks out of my spending once a week I could use that money to feed an African family for the entire month. The other side of the hunger coin is equally shocking. Americans spend $40 billion a year on diets and diet related products. Take a moment to really consider that: we can’t stop eating while people can’t start eating.
Please help me practice the art of under-indulgence. I've decided to lose weight for a good cause. By encouraging me to put less in my belly, you put food in someone's belly who really needs it. Please sponsor me for every pound I lose between April 1 and May 1. I chose Compassion International to support because it's been one of my favorite charities for years; I saw first-hand what they do in Kenya and they're fighing child poverty and hunger in amazing ways.
So, if you pledge me $2 per pound, and I lose 6 pounds at the end of the month, then that will be $12 that goes to feed hungry kids, how great is that? It only takes $10 to buy maize, bean, and groundnut seeds for a family to replant after floods, then to live off. Let's feed them together.
