Dear Friends -
Think Pink Rocks is a non-profit organization whose mission is to raise awareness about early detection of and genetic testing for breast cancer and to provide funding for screening, treatment and research.
Some members of Think Pink Rocks have a direct connection to breast cancer, but there are many team members who are running or walking simply because they want to support this important cause. I am now three years removed from my own cancer battle. I battled stage 2 testicular cancer, and spent the better part of a year undergoing surgeries and in chemotherapy. The 2016 NYC Half will be my fourth half marathon since the completion of my treatments. I am very fortunate. As long as I am able to, I want to contribute in any way I can to supporting the mission of finding more optimal methods for early screening and detection, improving treatments, and ultimately, improving cure rates, irrespective of the type of malignancy.
Here are a few facts about genetic risk factors associated with breast cancer and other malignancies:
• A woman's risk of developing breast and ovarian cancer is greatly increased if she carries the BRCA1 or BRCA2 mutation (BRCA stands for breast cancer gene mutation).
• Men with these mutations also have an increased risk of breast and prostate cancer.
• Mutations associates with BRCA1 and BRCA2 may also be associated with other malignancies such as pancreatic cancer.
The money raised for Think Pink Rocks from the 2016 NYC Half will benefit breast cancer research at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, where Think Pink Rocks has establshed a dedicated breast cancer research fund, as well as at the Breast Oncology Center at the University of Michigan, in addiiton to providing funding for treatment.
Think Pink Rocks is a 501 (c) (3) organization. Contributions to Think Pink Rocks are tax deductable to the extent allowable by law.
