BENEFITING: THINK PINK ROCKS
ORGANIZER: THINK PINK ROCKS
EVENT DATE: Nov 06, 2016
I'm running the NYC Marathon this fall for my beautiful, wonderful wife Lauren. She makes me feel like the luckiest guy in the universe everyday. She has been recently diagnosed with BRCA2, a breast cancer gene mutation. As a result of carrying the mutation, she has a significantly higher risk of developing certain cancers, including breast, ovarian, and pancreatic cancer.
Those of you who know Lauren know that she's a strong woman. She is taking this news head on. She plans to have prophylactic surgery as recommended by her physicians within the next year. Now that the initial shock of discovery has passed--she was the first to find out in her family--she actually feels blessed to have discovered she is a carrier outside of the context of having already been diagnosed with cancer (as unfortunately is the case with many women and men when they first find out they are BRCA carriers).
BRCA mutations are passed down from generation to generation and affect both women and men. We now know that Lauren's dear late grandfather Brooks, who suffered from breast cancer, carried the gene mutation and passed it on to several of his children. And because Lauren is a carrier, we know our kids have a 50% chance of possessing BRCA2 as well. Needless to say, our family is vested in the Think Pink Rocks cause and the breast cancer research and care efforts that the NYC marathon charity team funds will support.
Please consider donating to our marathon team to help support this charitable cause that is near and dear to my heart and the hearts of hundreds of others with loved ones who are BRCA mutation carriers. I strongly believe that the continued research efforts directed at BRCA mutations will lead to extraordinary medical and treatment breakthroughs in the near future!
THINK PINK ROCKS wrote -
Think Pink Rocks is a non-profit organization whose mission is to raise awareness about early detection of and genetic testing for breast cancer and to provide funding for screening, treatment and research.
Did you know:
• A woman's risk of developing breast and ovarian cancer is greatly increased if she carries the BRCA1 or BRCA2 mutation (Breast Cancer gene mutation).
• Men with these mutations also have an increased risk of breast and prostate cancer. Our team will raise money and awareness for breast cancer research.
All money raised for Think Pink Rocks from the 2016 TCS New York City Marathon will benefit breast cancer research at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York City and Breast Oncology Center at the University of Michigan. Some members of our team have a direct connection to breast cancer, but we also have many team members who are running or walking simply because they want to support a great cause.
Think Pink Rocks is a 501 (c) (3) organization. Contributions to Think Pink Rocks are tax deductable to the extent allowable by law.
