Scroll down if you want to read about why I'm running and how I got involved with Think Pink Rocks............please support and donate something - no amount is too little and no amount is too much ! We are all in this together, we have ALL been affected either directly or someone we love has been touched by cancer, please donate !!!
Think Pink Rocks is a non-profit organization whose mission is to raise awareness about early detection of and genetic testing for breast cancer and to provide funding for screening, treatment and research.
Did you know:
• A woman's risk of developing breast and ovarian cancer is greatly increased if she carries the BRCA1 or BRCA2 mutation (Breast Cancer gene mutation).
• Men with these mutations also have an increased risk of breast and prostate cancer. Our team will raise money and awareness for breast cancer research.
All money raised for Think Pink Rocks from the 2016 TCS New York City Marathon will benefit breast cancer research at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York City and Breast Oncology Center at the University of Michigan. Some members of our team have a direct connection to breast cancer, but we also have many team members who are running or walking simply because they want to support a great cause.
Think Pink Rocks is a 501 (c) (3) organization. Contributions to Think Pink Rocks are tax deductable to the extent allowable by law.
So how did i end up running the marathon and getting involved with this cause?
Recently, my son wanted to up his track game and asked that I take him running during the week. As I was NOT a runner, I decided to take him to an indoor track so that I could walk around the track while he ran and still keep an eye on him. A few weeks into it, I started a slow (very slow) jog and I got myself up to a few miles at a time. A few weeks ago, on our way back from one of our morning runs, we were talking about how many of our loved ones - both friends and family - had been diagnosed with cancer. We started talking about each of these people in our lives and how much they meant to us, how they were meeting the challenges and what we could do to help. My son suggested that since he was a runner, he could run the marathon and ask people to donate for each mile he ran and then he could donate the money for cancer research. I reminded him that he was 12 years old and that there would be thousands of other people I didn't know running and so although it was a great idea, it wouldn't be safe for him to do without supervision. He then came up with another idea, which was, that I could run with him ! " Really? " I asked. "Do you think I could do something like that? " His immediate answer was, why not? So since I'm raising my children to think "why not" ------ and being that my job description is to motivate, model, and mentor .............it was time to walk the walk and in this case - run the run ! Come to find out after committing to him that since he's only 12..........it'll just be me :) When I started to research what organization I would run for, our family friend, Rich Nelson, shared with me about his sister's incredible story, her courageous spirit and this incredibly worthy cause, THINK PINK ROCKS. So I'm all IN ! I started this thing 2 minutes at a time ----- 2 minutes running, 2 minutes walking........and now i'm running 8 straight miles. My pledge to you is that I am giving it my all. I am out there training and working hard. My every intention is to cross that finish line.........I may be the last one out there, I may need to walk or hobble or crawl..........it all counts !!!!!
