My name is Lorita and in February 2013, I lost my beautiful and amazing mother due to diffuse gastric cancer. She was just 60 years old and a few months shy of meeting her first grandchild. In the past few years I also lost two of my cousins who I considered my big brother and big sister growing up. They were both in their 30s when they died.
In Spring 2011, it was discovered that my family carried hereditary diffuse gastric cancer (HDGC). Individuals who inherit the genetic mutation for HDGC are at a high risk (around 60-80%) for developing gastric cancer in their lifetime. The majority of cases occur before the tender age of 40.
On Nov. 1st I will be walking for those I've lost...my mom, Rajen and Sandra. I want to raise funds to keep the research going because this type of cancer is very rare and often doesn't get funded. I want to raise awareness and help other families who have HDGC too. Lastly, I will be walking for my family and the hope for many happy, healthy days I spend with them.
Please consider donating any amount you can...even if it's just a few bucks. You're also welcome to walk with me on November 1st.
