On November 3rd 2013 I lost my Mom to Lung Cancer. It was the same day as the New York City Marathon that year.
4 years later, I have dedicated myself to run the NYC marathon in her memory.
I was pregnant when my Mom passed; I did not mourn her as I think I may have if I wasn’t. I was so scared to make sure my baby was going to be unaffected I tried not to get myself too upset. Six months later I had a healthy baby girl, a daughter who I see my Mother in every day.
I will log these miles to help heal myself and at the same time raise funds for a cause that is underfunded. Lung Cancer kills more women than breast cancer but gets little coverage; in fact Lung Cancer kills more that Breast, Colon and Prostate Cancers combined. You can get Lung Cancer if you are not a smoker.
This will be a hard journey for me. But nothing compared to the journey my Mother endured. My Mother taught me to be strong and persevere through her actions and her choices, even before she was diagnosed. She may not know she was passing these lessons to me, but she did. I will use these character traits to bring myself over that finish line so that hopefully, I can help save someone else the pain of losing their Mom too early.
