BENEFITING: THOMAS G LABRECQUE FOUNDATION
ORGANIZER: THOMAS G LABRECQUE FOUNDATION
I am running for Team Run As One in the NYC Marathon, benefiting the Thomas G Labrecque Foundation and LUNGevity to raise money for Lung Cancer research. I have put off funraising for a while for 2 reasons. First, I hate asking for money & second, because it's an emotional story for me to tell.
I ran my very 1st & only marathon a year and a half or so ago and swore I'd never run another. Then I saw that my big brother, Angus ran the NYC marathon and was inspired! I've always looked up to him and I am so proud of him for running in it. So I told him that I wanted to run with him next time. Of course I didn't qualify and I didn't make it in through the lottery. Instead, I have the opportunity to run for a charity. When I was researching charities, I wanted to find one that meant something to me personally. I was blown away when I found this one! If you know me, you probably know that my mom, Joan died when I was young. What you might not know is that she died from Lung Cancer. I was 11 years old when she was diagnosed and 13 when she died. She was only 53! When I was a kid, 53 didn't seem young to me but wow does it now! I miss my mom every single day and I wish so much that my kids and my husband could have met her. I still cry (I'm crying now) when I talk about her. My favorite compliment to get is for people to tell me how I look just like her. She was taken from us way too soon and boy did that suck! I have 4 kids and I am constantly worried about not being there for them. I feel so fortunate to have my health and have the ability to run a marathon. Life is not fair and there are people out there fighting to keep theirs.
What is really crazy is that Lung Cancer is still the #1 cancer killer even to people who have never smoked. Lung cancer takes more people than breast cancer, prostate cancer, colorectal cancer and melanoma combined. Crazy right? I honestly had no clue until I started looking for charities. So I feel like this was meant to be. I'm going to do this! I'm going to fundraise for these awesome charities. I'm going to run this marathon with my big brother and I know our mom is going to be right there with us cheering us on. The last and only time I've ever been to NY was with my mom and I'm going again in her honor.
If you could donate or know someone who would like to donate, please do whatever you can. I truly appreciate any and all help.
