Thousand Waves is a very special place to me. I've been training there for more than five years now, and aside from all the kata, kicks, punches, and joint locks I've learned, I've become a part of wonderful community. I had done a fair amount of volunteer work for them over the years, and this year I decided to give back even more by joining the board of directors.
Thousand Waves is a nonprofit organization that promotes health and fitness, personal empowerment, violence prevention, and active peacemaking through traditional martial arts, fitness, and self-defense programs for adults, teens, and youth.
Spirit Challenge is the annual fundraising event that allows members to take part in various physical events in support of the the center. This year I'm participating in four events: karate boot camp, kata, Art with Heart, and the Ricky Byrdsong Race Against Hate. My goal is to raise $500. Any amount you can give will help me reach my goal and will help keep Thousand Waves going strong. If you'd like to sponsor me for these events, please visit my Spirit Challenge page: http://bit.ly/SC11soph
Funds raised during Spirit Challenge help bring violence prevention programs to schools and neighborhood organizations where violence happens all the time, support Thousand Waves' Adapted Seido Karate program for kids with disabilities, and go toward Thousand Waves' scholarship fund, which ensures that anyone who wants to can have access to Thousand Waves programs.
