Through the Cracks

I call this concept "Through the Cracks" because it is specifically designed to help people who fall through all of the cracks of society's security nets.

The idea was sparked by a friend of mine who works for a large charity organization here in Florida. It seems a homeless man had been all over town looking for help. After many months, he had finally landed a job but one of the requirements was that he had to bring his own steel-toed boots. He had none. The short story is that had no job without the boots. He walked all over town trying to find a way to get the boots he needed. A pair of boots was all it would take to get him out of homelessness.

Not a single agency could help. Goodwill Industries might have been able to help, they handle a lot of clothing items, but the man wore size 16 boots and there were none anywhere. He would have to find a way to buy a new pair. Steel-toed boots aren't outrageously expensive...unless they're size 16!

My friend called me asking for help for this man. She was calling all of her friends asking them to chip in to save this man's job for him.

We did. He has his job. He's living in a small apartment and putting his life back together.

I have since learned that situations requiring only a small amount of help to produce big results for people happen every day.

I wish to put together a small starter fund to help in these kinds of situations. We will keep in touch with all local charities and agencies to learn of the situations where someone has fallen through all of the cracks, in need of only a small amount of help but can't find it.
