I never would have thought that what started out as a monthly ride group would end up as a non-profit charity that has raised over $400,000 for charity...wow! Now that the Texas Irish Cycling Team has created the Texas Irish Foundation, we can reach a broader audience and raise even more money for our charities.
The Texas Irish Foundation will donate 100% of its proceeds to charities which include: Genesis Women's Shelter, Children's Hospital of Texas, Center for Brain Health, Crohn's and Colitis Foundation, Wounded Warriors and the National MS Society.
I am personally focused on raising money for Genesis Women's Shelter which aims to end the epidemic of domestic violence against women and children. Fact: 1 in 4 women will experience domestic or dating violence in their lives. Fact: one women is beaten or abused every 9 seconds in this country. Fact: 1 in 3 teen girls weill experience dating violence. I can go on, but the statistics are sobering.
Far too many women, far too many children in this country are victims of this societal disease, and men are the problem. Yes, men are the problem, and we need to change how men and boys think about women and stand up against violence! Ending domestic violence requires more than providing shelter to victims, it requires prevention and action by those who can stand up against it. It's not enough to say that I don't hit my wife, girlfriend or kids...men must stand up and say not in my house, not amongst my friends, not in my community.
Join me in supporting Genesis Women's Shelter in providing a safe place for battered families and educating our men and boys to prevent violence before it starts. Violence should never be an option.
