BENEFITING: Delines Gift, Inc.
My initial goal was to raise $20,000 for my birthday so that marginalized women in Senegal, West Africa would get the opportunity to emerge out of extreme poverty.
Many of you stepped up to help reach my goal. You gave up much needed cups of coffee to be a shining example of the good in our world.
I'm amazed by your generosity. You've given me an amazing birthday and I'm very grateful. And inspired. Together, we are uplifting women half way around the world. So I am satisfied. But not finished. My birthday has been made. My heart is big and full. The mission, however, is not over. I say we finish it. I say we show the marginalized women of Senegal that they matter. That they deserve a future. That they are worth it. I say we show the world that we are givers. Global citizens. Humanitarians, who value human life and each other above all else.
The birthday deadline is gone. So there's no pressure. I don't care how long it takes us to raise the $20,000. A month. Six months. No worries.
But I know we can do this. I have faith in us. So. Donate however and whenever you can. Give up a $4 latte. A $15 car wash. Spread the word.
Your voice and care are our most powerful tools. Share your inspiration, and inspire others. We are spreading love in the most beautiful way. Let's keep it up.
This year for my birthday, I want to give rather than receive. Five years ago, I met Karine Sar, a beautiful & compassionate African woman, living in NYC and we bonded over laughter, life experiences and a passion for giving back. Over time, she shared her vision to launch an organization that would empower marginalized, disabled and impoverished Senegalese women through micro-loans and training to start their own small businesses. Being a lifelong entrepreneur, her vision spoke to my heart and I promised then that I would be a stand for it. Since then, we have traveled to her beautiful home country of Senegal (West Africa) on what was my first encounter with the magic of Africa. Though it was a wonderfully fun trip, it allowed me to witness first-hand the desolation that many women face due to extreme poverty and lack of resources. These encounters shifted me. The women confirmed what could be done to improve their circumstances: as little as $50 helped launch a micro-enterprise to generate enough daily income to feed and uplift their families. Such a small amount by Western standards… My resolve was solidified. Karine and I now had common purpose. Later that year, she launched Deline’s Gift and I became its proud Vice-President of the Board. To date, Deline’s Gift has given 250 hard-working, disabled & marginalized women in rural communities of Senegal completely free micro-loans to develop micro-enterprises and transform their lives. 100% of the loans have been repaid and re-loaned without interest or collateral. The organization targets women who struggle with disability, displacement due to war, injury due to landmines and extreme poverty but are neglected by banks and loaning institutions because they lack assets and represent too much of a risk . Yet, it is essential for these women to earn a living. Their very lives & humanity depend on it. And they need our help to do that: not a “handout” but the opportunity to succeed, something to be proud of because THEY WORKED FOR IT. The work Deline’s Gift does is transformative and essential. The micro-loans are a source of pure bliss and empowerment and women are lining up to be waitlisted for our program. But we cannot sign them up unless we raise funds. And that’s where you, friends, who believe in the human connection and in lifting each other up, come in. For my birthday this year (September 12th), I am asking you to help me raise $20,000 to provide 250 micro-loans to hard-working and deserving women. Let’s be a blessing to these women and change lives in Africa. I cannot imagine a better way to celebrate my birthday! Thank you!
