BENEFITING: Brothers and Sisters in Community Service
EVENT DATE: Jun 24, 2017
Hi everyone! Please help me raise funds for an immersion trip I will be going on in one of the poorest areas of Tijuana, Mexico. During the week of July 8-15, I will join a group of 80+ participants as we travel to La Morita, where we will build 5 housing structures for families in great need of healthy living conditions. In addition, we will run three separate programs for the mothers, children and teens. I will be helping with the children's program during this trip. One great thing about this program is that we are not just helping those who are in great need. We take the time to get to know the people of the area, learn their stories, and enjoy each other's company. Throughout the week, we also have the opportunity to learn about social justice issues by visiting a memorial at the US/Mexican Border and meet individuals at Casa del Migrante, a homeless shelter for migrants and recently deported men. 10 years ago, I had the great privilege of participating in this immersion trip. Working on the construction crew, I helped build the frame of the house, paint, and install insulation and sheet rock! I remember the great joy of meeting the children of the family we were building for and communicating with very broken English and a LOT of hand gestures! Since then, I have been working in the background, unable to return until this year. I am very excited about getting to meet the people of La Morita again!
