Arts Alive is the presenting entity of the Tillett Foundation, Inc., whose home is the Tillett Gardens located on the island of St. Thomas, VI. On an ongoing basis, Arts Alive annually presents Art in the Garden – Arts & Crafts Festivals and the Concerts in the Garden series in Tillett Gardens. Arts Alive was started by Rhoda Tillett and her son Eric.
A central part of the Mission of Arts Alive is “to involve and encourage young people in the appreciation, study, performance, and exhibition of music and visual arts.” Over the last 34 years, Arts Alive has provided over 100 school outreach concerts and workshops. It has also sponsored numerous Art competitions involving young people and worked with local businesses in presenting musical showcases and competitions
at Tillett Gardens.
In 2012, the Arts Alive Board of Directors established the Youth Scholarship Fund which provides partial support to young people who are seeking to pursue music as a career. This support comes in the form of grants given to students who have been accepted to summer workshops such as Interlochen and Litchfield Jazz Camp. In 2013, we extended the program to young art students to encourage them to follow their dreams in the world of art and music. This in turn would shape our youth into noble citizens of the Virgin Islands and decrease their association with violence and gangs.
Concert tickets and festival fees do not cover expenses. Corporate sponsorships, foundation grants, arts endowment awards, fundraisers and individual contributions help to cover the scholarship program. The youth of St. Thomas need your support, and the easiest way to do this is to donate toward the scholarship program, so that we can expand the number of scholarshipd per year. Our goal is to hand over $25,000 in schoarships to 25 musically talented students by June 2016. Even if your contribution is small, it will still make a difference to a student whom wishes to grow.
